The Picture of Freedom

by A. Tosone

When you’re involved in rescue you willingly get on an emotional rollercoaster. Period. End of discussion. The highs and the lows are guaranteed terms of service in this business. The ride with the biggest high and the lowest lows is the Freedom Ride, the final trek from the shelter to a place of safety. Walking up to a cage containing a dejected soul will break one’s heart over and over again. It never gets any easier to see a dog who’s spirit has broken, some of them too broken to lift their head or shift their gaze toward you. And knowing how many you are going to leave behind is even more painful to acknowledge. But the high of this ride is the all-time high of highs. A dog can smell Freedom. He really can and that, my friends, makes riding the rollercoaster worth it.
