From the Chopping Block: Farmers’ Market Season is Here

It’s time to dust off your favorite farmers’ market tote, the season for shopping locally is finally here! This year, there’s something new at the Thursday evening market in Lincoln Square: chef demonstrations by The Chopping Block. We are excited to bring our cooking lessons right to you at the market each week at 6pm. Bring your cooking questions for our chefs!

In addition to learning how to make a dish with ingredients procured from right there at the market, you’ll be able to taste wine that we paired with that dish. If you love it, you can head over to our store just down the street to purchase a bottle to take home with you.

Our popular Farmer’s Market Tour and Cooking Class also returns in June. This is one of our chefs’ favorite classes to teach because it’s all about talking to local farmers about their produce and the best way to cook it. After touring the market and shopping, you’ll head to our kitchen for an impromptu cooking class where the chef will use the market-fresh ingredients to improvise a delicious meal including an appetizer, an entrée and dessert.

One of the ingredients you’ll be likely see at the start of the farmers’ market season is rhubarb. Our Owner/Chef Shelley Young demonstrates how to work with rhubarb with two seasonal recipes in this video on how to make Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp and Rhubarb Cupcakes.

The Lincoln Square Farmers’ Market opens on June 5 (Tuesday mornings) and June 7 (Thursday evenings). They are held weekly through October. We’ll be set up each week at the City of Chicago municipal parking lot located at the Western CTA Brown Line Station. In addition to our new chef demonstrations on Thursdays, look for new kids’ activities on Tuesdays. Stop by each week for a taste of fresh fruits and vegetables and learn how to cook with them.
