Seasoned Salts Handmade by our Seasoned Chef
The Chopping Block is excited to launch a new line of products designed to help you flavor your food better. Our Owner/Chef Shelley Young is creating handmade salt blends in Michigan now, and she has plans for more dried herbs, herb blends, spices, spice blends, sugar blends and more to come. The first products to hit our store shelves are the Herbs de Provence Salt and Lemon Salt.
The Herbs de Provence Salt blend includes Basil, Parsley, Lavender, Tarragon, Parsley, Oregano, Marjoram, Thyme, Rosemary and Kosher salt. Shelley is growing the herbs in her garden, drying them and making the salt by hand then aging it slightly to infuse the herbs’ flavors into the salt.
There are unlimited uses for this versatile salt from simply using it as a finishing salt on the beautiful fresh tomatoes that are abound at local farmers markets to adding it to baked goods like biscuits, cornbread, homemade crackers or dinner rolls.

Another salt that is the perfect complement to summertime cooking is our Lemon Salt. It’s made by combining fresh squeezed lemon juice (each jar has 2 ounces of lemon juice in it!) with kosher salt and letting the lemon juice evaporate at room temperature. Shelley then adds lemon peel she has dried and ground to the salt.
Watch for recipes featuring these new salts in our upcoming cooking classes. We’ve also used them in a few of our weekly cooking demonstrations this summer at the Lincoln Square Farmers Market.
